Our Mission
To make buying refurbished electronics in Australia easy, informed, and trustworthy — so more people choose refurb over new, and the enormous environmental cost of device manufacturing is shared, reduced, and delayed.
Why We Built This
Every new smartphone manufactured generates roughly 55–70 kg of CO₂ equivalent and consumes around 190 litres of water — before it's even unboxed. Multiply that by the 16 million smartphones Australians buy each year, and the environmental impact of consumer electronics becomes staggering.
The refurbished market offers a direct, practical solution: buy a device that already exists. Extend its life. Delay the landfill. Reduce the demand for new manufacturing. It sounds simple — and it is — but for too long, Australian consumers have faced a fragmented, hard-to-navigate landscape of sellers with wildly inconsistent quality, pricing, and transparency.
We looked around and found no single, independent, data-driven source that could answer the question: "Which refurb seller can I actually trust?" So we built one.
Our Values
Sustainability First
Every refurb purchase extends a device's life, reducing e-waste and the carbon footprint of new manufacturing. We believe this is one of the most accessible climate actions available to everyday Australians.
Radical Transparency
Our scoring methodology is fully published, open, and Bayesian — the same statistical approach used by Amazon, Netflix and IMDb. No black boxes. No paid placements. No affiliate relationships.
Consumer Advocacy
We exist to serve buyers, not sellers. Our scores are derived from public review data and independent assessment — not vendor submissions or commercial arrangements of any kind.
Australian Focus
We cover vendors that operate in Australia, with scores calibrated to AU consumer expectations around warranty, returns, and ABN-verified operations. No generic global lists.
The Problem We're Solving
When a consumer wants to buy a refurbished iPhone or laptop in Australia, they face an overwhelming and fragmented landscape. Reviews are scattered across Trustpilot, ProductReview, Google, and social media. Some vendors are highly reputable specialists with thousands of verified reviews; others are eBay or Gumtree resellers with no accountability. There is no single place to compare them fairly.
Meanwhile, the industry as a whole lacks standardised quality grading, transparent return policies, and consistent warranty terms. Without independent oversight, consumers are left to guess — and the market pays the price in lost trust.
RefurbVerify brings all of this into one dashboard. We aggregate Trustpilot and ProductReview ratings, apply Bayesian statistical adjustment to correct for sample size bias, and combine this with independent assessments of transparency and operational legitimacy. The result is a single 0–100 TrustScore that lets any Australian consumer make a confident, informed decision about where to buy.
Why Refurb? The Climate Case
Consumer electronics is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. Globally, over 50 million tonnes of e-waste are generated each year, with Australia producing approximately 700,000 tonnes annually — one of the highest per-capita rates in the world.
Manufacturing a single smartphone requires the mining of rare earth metals, the consumption of hundreds of litres of water, and the release of significant greenhouse gases. When that device ends up in landfill after two or three years — rather than being refurbished and resold — the entire environmental cost of manufacturing it is wasted.
Buying refurbished doesn't just save money. It:
- Extends the useful life of a device already in circulation
- Reduces demand for new manufacturing and its associated resource extraction
- Keeps devices out of landfill and the toxic e-waste stream
- Supports a circular economy where materials and products are used to their full potential
- Sends a market signal to manufacturers that consumers value longevity and repairability
We believe that everyone should do their part to reduce waste, recycle more, and adopt sustainable lifestyle practices. And we believe that one of the most practical, high-impact things an Australian consumer can do today — right now, without changing anything else — is simply choose refurb over new next time they need a phone, tablet, or laptop.
Who We Are
RefurbVerify was founded by a small team of Australians with backgrounds in consumer technology, data science, and sustainability advocacy.
We are consumers who got frustrated with a broken market, decided to fix the information problem, and built the tool we wished had existed.
Our Principles
Independence: We have no commercial relationships with any vendor listed on RefurbVerify. Scores cannot be purchased, influenced, or removed through payment.
