An independent read of the whole australian market — 92 sellers tracked, 49 with enough public review data to score. Free to cite with attribution.
Only 2 of 49 sellers clear 86/100. The bar is high by design: it requires strong ratings on both review platforms, published grading and battery disclosure, and verifiable local operations.
The median is 63 and the standard deviation 9.4, so most sellers cluster tightly in the middle. Scores run from 47 to 91.
Businesses whose core trade is refurbished devices average 67.0. General retailers and marketplaces average 60.5 — a gap of 6.4 points. Retailer ratings are whole-platform, covering every product category rather than refurbished devices alone, so the gap measures reputation breadth as much as refurbishment quality.
Nearly half the australian market operates with too few public reviews to assess. That is not a judgement on quality — it means buyers have almost no independent evidence to go on.
Every seller is scored 0–100 on the RefurbVerify TrustScore: 50 points from Bayesian-adjusted public review ratings, 20 from refurbishment transparency, 20 from operational legitimacy, plus a review-volume bonus. Full methodology →

A low score is not an accusation. For large retailers and marketplaces the underlying review ratings are whole-platform — they reflect the business overall, not its refurbished range specifically.
Three practical conclusions follow from the data.
The top of the market is genuinely narrow. With only 4% of scored sellers reaching Top Rated, "certified refurbished" as a phrase carries far less information than the specific seller behind it.
Category matters more than brand recognition. The best-known names are frequently not the best-scoring ones, because scale and reputation for refurbishment are different things.
Absence of data is itself a finding. Nearly half the tracked market cannot be scored at all for lack of public reviews. Where a seller has no meaningful review history, buyers are relying on the seller's own claims.
