Big-name retailers now sell refurbished tech, but two things matter: their ranges are typically stocked by third-party sellers, and their review scores reflect the whole platform, not refurbished products specifically. That's why they trail the specialists:

No Australian regulator certifies "verified" or "certified" refurbished — every seller defines it themselves. Industry insiders warned in May 2026 that cosmetic grading alone can hide replaced screens, swapped batteries and even counterfeit internal parts. A seller genuinely worth the word "verified" can show you:
Grading: Australian sellers use their own labels, but they map roughly to: Ex-Demo/Like New (no visible wear), Excellent/Grade A (near-perfect, minor marks), Very Good/Grade B (light scratches, best value), and Good/Fair/Grade C (visible wear, fully functional). Warranty and the law: whatever warranty a seller offers, Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply on top — a refurbished device must be of acceptable quality, and you keep remedy rights (repair, replacement or refund) even if the seller's own warranty has expired. A seller that mentions your ACL rights alongside its warranty is a good sign; one that implies the warranty is your only protection is not.
